Door installation replaces an interior or exterior door with a new prehung or slab door that is leveled, shimmed and trimmed so it swings and closes right. Csiszer Property Maintenance, an insured handyman company serving Essex County and Union County, NJ, installs doors for homeowners, landlords and businesses, from one closet door to every door in a unit. The old door comes out, the new one goes in plumb, and the casing is finished around it.Updated · Csiszer Property Maintenance, based in Kearny, NJ

What Is Door Installation?

Door installation sets a new door in an existing opening so it hangs plumb, clears the floor and latches without force. It's one part of our door and window repair and installation services.

There are two ways to put in a new door. A prehung door arrives already hung in its own frame, so the old frame comes out and the new unit is shimmed into the rough opening. A slab is only the door: it's cut to the existing frame, and the hinge mortises are laid out to match. Which one fits depends on the frame, the opening and the trim you want to keep.

In older Essex County homes, openings are often out of square and not a stock size, and floors have settled. That's why measurements come before any purchase. The right choice is sometimes a slab fitted to a good old frame, and sometimes a prehung unit with the opening trued up. Either way, the gap, the swing and the latch are checked before the trim goes on.

  • Slab door fitting

  • Wireless doorbell

A wireless doorbell that needs no wiring mounted beside the new entry door.

When You Need Door Installation: 6 Signs

You need door installation when the door itself is damaged or no longer suits the room. If only the fit is off, a repair usually costs less.

  1. A hollow door has a hole or split face

Hollow-core doors can't be patched well once the face cracks. A new door is cleaner than a filled hole.

  2. The door is warped

A door that touches the stop at one corner but not the other is twisted, and no hinge adjustment will flatten it.

  3. An exterior door is soft at the bottom

Years of rain and snow at the threshold can rot the bottom rail. A soft or swollen bottom edge is a sign to replace.

  4. Drafts stay after new weatherstrip

If fresh seals don't stop the draft, the door or frame may be too far out of line to seal well.

  5. You want quieter or sturdier doors

Solid-core doors block more sound than hollow ones, a common upgrade for bedrooms and home offices.

  6. Doors don't match before a sale

Mismatched or damaged doors stand out in listing photos and walk-throughs. Replacing a few can tie a home together.

How Our Door Installation Works, Step by Step

Our door installation takes five steps: photos and measurements, a review, a written quote, the install, and trim with a final check.

  1. Send photos and measurements

Photograph the opening and the existing door from both sides, and measure the door's width, height and thickness. Note which way it swings.

  2. We review, or visit if needed

We check whether the frame can stay, whether the opening is standard and whether a prehung or slab door fits best. If photos aren't enough, we visit first, at no charge, then send the written quote.

  3. Get a written quote and pick a day

You get a written quote before anything is booked. Approve it and choose a weekday between 8 AM and 5 PM.

  4. Remove, set, shim and level

The old door comes out, the new door is set, shimmed plumb and secured, and the swing and latch side gap are checked before anything is nailed off.

  5. Trim, seal and clean up

Casing goes on, exterior doors get weatherstripping and insulation at the frame, and the area is cleaned before we leave.

What's Included in Door Installation

Every door installation includes removal of the old door, the install, trim and cleanup. Lock work, wiring and structural changes to the opening are left out.

Included

  • Removing the old door
  • Installing prehung or slab doors, shimmed and leveled
  • Casing and trim around the new door
  • Weatherstripping on exterior doors, plus a wireless doorbell (no wiring)

Not included: needs a licensed pro, certification or permit

  • Rekeying, repairing or adjusting locks: a licensed locksmith
  • Wired or video doorbells and any new wiring: a licensed electrician
  • Widening the opening or changing the framing: permitted structural work

Under New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code (N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7), replacing a door in the same opening without changing its size or framing is ordinary maintenance and needs no permit. The Division of Consumer Affairs licenses locksmiths.

How Much Does Door Installation Cost?

Door installation cost depends on the door type, prehung or slab, the trim and removing the old door. Photos and measurements help us review the job, and the price is in writing before anything is scheduled.

The quote covers the labor to remove the old door, set the new one, trim it and clean up. A prehung door in a standard opening is the most direct job. A slab fitted to an old frame takes more steps, because the door is cut to size and the hinges are mortised to match the jamb.

Several doors in one visit are quoted together, which suits bedroom upgrades, rental turnovers and pre-sale refreshes. [PREENCHER: política de material, quem compra a porta]

Door Installation Mistakes That Leave a Door Crooked

Most bad door installs trace back to the wrong size, the wrong swing or a frame that was never made plumb. Here's what to avoid, how to choose prehung or slab, and how to get ready.

Six Common Door Installation Mistakes

Six mistakes cause most new door problems: buying before measuring, ordering the wrong swing, shimming only at the hinges, too much foam at the frame, ignoring floor clearance and leaving the edges unfinished.

  • Buying before measuring

Older openings are rarely stock sizes. Measure the door and the opening first, or the new door won't fit.

  • Ordering the wrong swing

Prehung doors come left- or right-handed. A door that swings into a wall or light switch has to go back.

  • Shimming only at the hinges

Without shims at the latch side and head, the jamb bows when it's nailed, and the gap turns uneven.

  • Too much foam at the frame

Expanding foam that isn't made for doors and windows can push the jamb inward until the door binds.

  • Ignoring floor clearance

Rugs, thresholds and settled floors change the gap under a door. It's checked before the slab is cut.

  • Leaving the edges unfinished

Bare top and bottom edges let a door take on moisture and warp. Every edge should be sealed or painted.

Prehung or Slab Door: How to Decide

Go prehung when the frame is damaged; fit a slab when the frame is sound. If only the fit is off, door repair may be enough.

Choose prehung when

  • The old frame is split, rotted or loose
  • The opening is close to a stock size
  • You're replacing the casing anyway
  • It's an exterior door that needs a new seal

Choose a slab when

  • The existing frame is solid and square enough
  • You want to keep original trim in place
  • The opening is an odd, older size
  • Only the door is damaged, not the jamb

Before Your Door Installation Visit: A Quick Checklist

Six small things make the install faster. If the old door only sticks in humid months, see door sticking in summer first.

  • Measure the door's width, height and thickness
  • Note which way the door swings and opens
  • Photograph the old door and its frame
  • Keep your lockset box or brand for the locksmith
  • Clear a path to the door and a spot to work
  • Decide whether you want the old casing reused

Why Choose Csiszer Property Maintenance for Door Installation

Choose us for door installation because the opening is measured before you buy, and one insured team hangs, trims and finishes the door.

  • Insured, door by door

Old doors come out and new ones go in plumb under an insured handyman company, in homes and rentals.

  • Doors quoted by the unit

Every door in a unit is reviewed from photos and measurements and quoted together, in writing.

  • Measured before you buy

Photos and measurements show whether a prehung or slab door fits, before money goes into the wrong one.

  • Built for older openings

Out-of-square frames and settled floors are shimmed and fitted, so the gap is even all around.

  • Trim and paint in one job

Casing and painting can be part of the same visit, so there's no second contractor to schedule.

  • Exterior doors sealed tight

Entry and back doors are shimmed plumb, insulated around the frame and fitted with weatherstripping.

Door Installation Questions, Answered Straight

These are the questions people ask most before a door installation. For other jobs, see all our door and window services.

How much does door installation cost in New Jersey?

It depends on the door type, whether it's prehung or a slab, the trim and whether the old door comes out first. Send photos of the opening and its measurements, or describe the job. If the photos show enough, you get a written quote; if the opening needs a closer look, we visit first, at no charge. Either way, the price is in writing before anything is scheduled.

Will a standard door fit my old house?

Not always. Older openings are often not standard sizes or not square, so a slab door cut to fit the existing frame, or a custom size, may be needed. Measurements and photos tell us which before you buy anything.

Should I get a prehung door or a slab door?

A prehung door comes in its own frame and is best when the old frame is damaged or the opening is standard. A slab is just the door and is best when the existing frame is solid and you want to keep the original trim.

What about the lock on the new door?

Lock work isn't part of our service. New Jersey licenses locksmiths, and state law counts repairing, rekeying and installing locking devices as locksmithing services. If you want the new lock keyed to match your other doors, that's a job for a licensed locksmith.

Do I need a permit to replace a door in New Jersey?

Usually not. New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code treats replacing a door in the same opening, without changing the size or framing, as ordinary maintenance that needs no permit. Widening the opening or changing the framing does need one, and fire-rated door assemblies are an exception.

Who installs exterior doors in Essex County, NJ?

Csiszer Property Maintenance, an insured handyman company serving Essex County and Union County, NJ. Entry and back doors are installed, shimmed plumb, insulated around the frame and fitted with weatherstripping. If you also want a storm door, it can go on in the same visit.

Can you install a wireless doorbell?

Yes, a wireless doorbell that needs no wiring can be mounted with the new door. Wired and video doorbells that need new wiring go to a licensed electrician.

Can you match the trim around the new door?

Yes. New casing is cut and installed around every door we hang, and existing casing can be reused when it comes off in good shape. For hard-to-find old profiles, see our trim installation service.

Can you paint the new door too?

Yes. Painting can be added to the same job, including the edges, so the door is sealed on every side. See door painting for interior doors, front doors and trim.

Can you replace doors in a rental between tenants?

Yes. Share a photo and measurements of each door with the unit number, and they're reviewed and quoted together. Grouping doors with other turnover repairs gets more done in one visit.
